• All certified educators employed in South Carolina are required to earn a minimum of 120 renewal credits for certification renewal. An educator's professional certification is valid for five years and expires on June 30 of the expiration year. All renewal points must be earned within the five year period of the educator's certification.

    If an educator holds a bachelor's degree, the educator must complete at least three semester hours in graduate credit.

    Professional development activities that directly relate to the educator's professional growth and development plan (GBE), support the goals of the district's strategic plan and the school's improvement plan, and promote student achievement.

    JASON FLATT TRAINING REQUIREMENT

    Educators who teach in the middle and high school level are required to complete the Jason Flatt Training Requirement. Two hours of training in youth suicide awareness and prevention are required and count toward the 120 renewal credits specified by the Department of Education.
