Lexington County School District One’s Special Services Program is devoted to enriching the lives of students with developmental delays or disabilities. The program provides early intervention services to children between the ages of 3 and 5 years and a continuum of special services for students from 3 to 21 years.
Preschool Screening and Evaluation
The district screens students for developmental delays beginning at age 2 years 10 months. You may elect to have your child evaluated if you have concerns about your child’s development in any of the following areas:
- Communication skills
- Motor skills
- Cognitive skills
- Socialization skills
- Self-help skills
Following screening, a multidisciplinary team will meet with you to determine if a developmental delay or disability is suspected. If so, a comprehensive evaluation will be recommended.
If a comprehensive evaluation is necessary, then that assessment will determine if your child will need related services, such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, and applied behavior therapy. One or more of these related services may be recommended if they are necessary to the child’s progression in the educational setting.
Scheduling a Screening Appointment
Preschool screening clinics are conducted by appointment during the school year. Parents may schedule a screening appointment for their child by contacting the Special Services department at 803.821.1101.
