06-10-2021 — GHS wins state baseball championship
Gilbert High School’s baseball team won the Class 3A state championship on Saturday, June 5, with a 12–3 win over West-Oak High School in the final game of the best-of-three series.
GHS previously won three Class 2A titles and one Class A title; this fifth state baseball championship celebrates the Indians’ first state title in Class 3A.
Coach Ashley Burnett, in his 25th season at GHS, led the team to four of those five state titles and won more than 500 games.
“This team continued to work hard all season,” said Burnett. “This year was hard mentally and physically, with temperature checks, health concerns and COVID worries adding to the day-to-day grind. But these players persevered.”
GHS entered the playoffs unranked. The team lost just once, a 6–0 defeat in Game 2 to West Oak in the playoffs, and scored 26 runs in the two other games of the title series.
“At the end of the year and especially in the playoffs, they were on fire. It was amazing to watch,” said Burnett.
Congratulations to the Indians!
